Six was funny, electric, and powerful. As you probably already know, Six The Musical revolves around the 6 wives of Henry the eighth. This musical got its start on the West End in England, so it was strange that they made all the characters keep their American accents. Also in one song the word “mate” was changed to “friends”. As if the writers don’t believe in the integrity of the American audience to understand that friends and mates are practically the same thing. Moving aside from the minor details, all of the songs were very powerful and made the audience swoon for feminism. All of the outfits are obviously amazing and one can tell much detail goes into each. I thought it was interesting how all of the outfits were based on a real pop star considering the show resembles a concert. You really feel like you’re at a concert when the music and the lights blare. The lighting design was fantastic and often used to match each queen's color when singing their solos. Additionally, all the transitions are very smooth. There is an opening song, a closing song, and a solo each queen gets, but there is also a song called, “Haus of Holbein”. The song is extremely funny, though slightly random, but I must say it is a great transition into the following queen’s song. Every song is beautifully written. They all give just enough historical information, but further the plot. Not to mention, they’re extremely catchy. One of my favorite lyrics from the show is from “Don’t Lose Your Head”, sung by Anne Boleyn. The line goes, “And soon my daddy said, ‘you should try and get ahead’.”. This line is so detailed because it has a triple meaning. One meaning is that she must further herself to marry the king. Another is that she must ‘get a head’ so as to be smarter. And the last one is of course an ode to the fact that she was beheaded. All of the lyrics are impeccably written and this is only one example. Personally, I found some of the dialogue to be awkward, it didn’t flow like a real conversation. However this is made up for with equal amounts of singing and choreography. The writers know how to make the audience feel energetic and then add a perfectly placed ballad to calm the audience down. Also I think it was a great choice to have an all female band, after all this show is about taking back womanhood. The ending is simple because it nearly ends with the song that started it all, but it surprisingly works. This is because the queens have now accepted the fact that they’re all equal and all went through struggles. Despite this show being light-hearted and upbeat, the writers still managed to make me cry. I would definitely see this show again.
