Jojo's Tony Awards Predictions 2022

Updated: Aug 17, 2022

Red= Who I believe should win

Green= Who I think will win

Best Play

“Clyde’s”

“Hangmen”

“The Lehman Trilogy”

“The Minutes”

“Skeleton Crew”

I did not get a chance to see any of these plays this season, but I’ve heard good things about “The Lehman Trilogy”, so this is my best guess.

Best Musical

“Girl From The North Country”

“MJ”

“Mr. Saturday Night”

“Paradise Square”

“Six: The Musical”

“A Strange Loop”

If you’ve been reading my blog, you know how I feel about “Girl From The North Country”. I honestly would not be upset if it won. I think Six is really deserving because I know how far that production team has come to get their show both on the West End and Broadway. I’ve yet to see “A Strange Loop”, so maybe I will change my mind. So far I’ve heard great things about it, despite the fact it’s been on TKTS frequently. I hope I can see it before it wins a Tony because prices will go up! As for “Paradise Square”, it got poor reviews and it was not something that seemed particularly interesting to me. “MJ” the musical is just horrendous. The whole plot line and i’m just not a fan of Michael Jackson. It’s already hard for me to get behind jukebox musicals, but that one is just awful.

Best Revival of a Play

“American Buffalo”

“for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf”

“How I Learned to Drive”

“Take Me Out”

“Trouble in Mind”

Again, I’m not a big play person so I’ve yet to see any of these. I was interested in seeing American Buffalo, until I found out the writer supports the Don’t Say Gay bill. Transphobia is still alive and well on Broadway, so it will not shock me when this show wins the Tony. I’ve been interested to see both “How I Learned to Drive” and “Take Me Out”. Based on the plot line alone, I think “How I Learned to Drive” is deserving of this award because it discusses sexual assault and domestic abuse.

Best Revival of a Musical

“Caroline, or Change”

“Company”

“The Music Man”

I’ve heard great things about “Caroline, or Change” and it has a phenomenal cast. I think that Company will win partially based on the fact that the dear Mr. Sondhiem has left us this year. And perhaps it’s deserving as well because the score is beautifully written and I think it’s so cool how Bobbie was genderswaped!

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play

Simon Russell Beale, “The Lehman Trilogy”

Adam Godley, “The Lehman Trilogy”

Adrian Lester, “The Lehman Trilogy”

David Morse, “How I Learned to Drive”

Sam Rockwell, “American Buffalo”

Ruben Santiago-Hudson, “Lackawanna Blues”

David Threlfall, “Hangmen”

This is really just a guess because this category is so big and having 3 people from “The Lehman Trilogy” automatically makes them less likely to win because the votes will be split.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play

Gabby Beans, “The Skin of Our Teeth”

LaChanze, “Trouble in Mind”

Ruth Negga, “Macbeth”

Deirdre O’Connell, “Dana H.”

Mary-Louise Parker, “How I Learned to Drive”

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical

Billy Crystal, “Mr. Saturday Night”

Myles Frost, “MJ”

Hugh Jackman, “The Music Man”

Rob McClure, “Mrs. Doubtfire”

Jaquel Spivey, “A Strange Loop”

Hugh Jackman will probably win this award based on the fact that well… he’s Hugh Jackman. I don’t particularly think he deserves it, certainly not for this show. Now you know my thoughts on “MJ”. And as for Rob McClure, NOBODY is deserving to win an award for playing a transphobic character. I don’t have many thoughts on “Mr. Saturday Night”. To be honest I don’t think anyone has any strong opinions on it.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical

Sharon D Clarke, “Caroline, or Change”

Carmen Cusack, “Flying Over Sunset”

Sutton Foster, “The Music Man”

Joaquina Kalukango, “Paradise Square”

Mare Winningham, “Girl From The North Country”

I know Sutton will win this one because everyone loves her. I’m not a fan. In my opinion her voice is too character-y and it annoys me. I chose Mare Winningham because I did not see the rest of these actresses' performances.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play

Alfie Allen, “Hangmen”

Chuck Cooper, “Trouble in Mind”

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, “Take Me Out”

Ron Cephas Jones, “Clyde’s”

Michael Oberholtzer, “Take Me Out”

Jesse Williams, “Take Me Out”

I choose Jesse Tyler Ferguson because he’s an all around great actor, who can play so many diverse roles. I think that Alfie Allen will win because my dad seems to think “Hangmen” will win best play and I trust him to a certain extent. At least to know about the boring stuff.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play

Uzo Aduba, “Clyde’s”

Rachel Dratch, “POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive”

Kenita R. Miller, “for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf”

Phylicia Rashad, “Skeleton Crew”

Julie White, “POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive”

Kara Young, “Clyde’s”

I really have not seen any of these shows and I’m unfamiliar with most of these actresses, therefore I did not select a “who I think deserves to win” for this category. Dratch is a big name, being on SNL and all, so she’s likely to win.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical

Matt Doyle, “Company”

Sidney DuPont, “Paradise Square”

Jared Grimes, “Funny Girl”

John-Andrew Morrison, “A Strange Loop”

A.J. Shively, “Paradise Square”

Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical

Jeannette Bayardelle, “Girl From The North Country”

Shoshana Bean, “Mr. Saturday Night”

Jayne Houdyshell, “The Music Man”

L Morgan Lee, “A Strange Loop”

Patti LuPone, “Company”

Jennifer Simard, “Company”

LuPone hardly has a featured role in this, but I still think she will win just based on what I know about Tony voters these days. I highly enjoyed Jeannette Bayardelle’s performance in “Girl From The North Country”. I thought her voice was so soothing and she’s an amazing actress.

Best Direction of a Play

Lileana Blain-Cruz, “The Skin of Our Teeth”

Camille A. Brown, “for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf”

Sam Mendes, “The Lehman Trilogy”

Neil Pepe, “American Buffalo”

Les Waters, “Dana H.”

Best Direction of a Musical

Stephen Brackett, “A Strange Loop”

Marianne Elliott, “Company”

Conor McPherson, “Girl From The North Country”

Lucy Moss & Jamie Armitage, “Six: The Musical”

Christopher Wheeldon, “MJ”

I’m a bit biased because I trust Stephen Brackett with my life. This man just knows what he’s doing and he’s part of the reason “Be More Chill” flows so well. He certainly deserves this win.

Best Scenic Design of a Play

Beowulf Boritt, “POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive”

Michael Carnahan and Nicholas Hussong, “Skeleton Crew”

Es Devlin, “The Lehman Trilogy”

Anna Fleischle, “Hangmen”

Scott Pask, “American Buffalo”

Adam Rigg, “The Skin of Our Teeth”

I’m just not qualified to speak on this, so I’m not going to. This is purely a guess. From what I’ve seen their setting looked pretty cool.

Best Scenic Design of a Musical

Beowulf Boritt and 59 Productions, “Flying Over Sunset”

Bunny Christie, “Company”

Arnulfo Maldonado, “A Strange Loop”

Derek McLane and Peter Nigrini, “MJ”

Allen Moyer, “Paradise Square”

Best Book of a Musical

“Girl From The North Country” - Conor McPherson

“MJ” - Lynn Nottage

“Mr. Saturday Night” -Billy Crystal, Lowell Ganz & Babaloo Mandel

“Paradise Square” - Christina Anderson, Craig Lucas & Larry Kirwan

“A Strange Loop” - Michael R. Jackson

I’m rooting for Jackson, but I think he will win so many awards that they might have to give this one to someone else. I would have picked McPherson, but his book was confusing and hard to follow.

Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics)

“Flying Over Sunset”

Music: Tom Kitt Lyrics: Michael Korie

“Mr. Saturday Night”

Music: Jason Robert Brown Lyrics: Amanda Green

“Paradise Square”

Music: Jason Howland

Lyrics: Nathan Tysen & Masi Asare

“Six: The Musical”

Music and Lyrics: Toby Marlow & Lucy Moss

“A Strange Loop”

Music & Lyrics: Michael R. Jackson

Now this is where it gets interesting. Because all of these people are crazily talented. I feel like it will go to Tom Kitt because he never misses. And I think Flying Over Sunset was targeted to the demographic that also votes for the Tony’s (old people). But honestly, Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss deserve this award for “Six”. Their lyrics are quite creative and they make a fun score that everyone wants to sing along to.

Best Costume Design of a Musical

Fly Davis, Caroline, or Change

Toni-Leslie James, Paradise Square

William Ivey Long, Diana, The Musical

Santo Loquasto, The Music Man

Gabriella Slade, SIX: The Musical

Paul Tazewell, MJ

I loved Tazewells work on the newest version of West Side Story, but I must say that there is no doubt in my mind that Slade deserves this award. Those costumes are amazingly intricate and take days to create. From someone who has tried to make a cosplay version of Anne Boylen, (which is not even close to exact) I know it’s difficult. And those costumes are beautiful! They were inspired by real pop stars, which is so cool.

Best Lighting Design of a Play

Joshua Carr, Hangmen

Jiyoun Chang, for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf Jon Clark, The Lehman Trilogy

Jane Cox, Macbeth

Yi Zhao, The Skin of Our Teeth

Again, I have not seen any of these, therefore this is just my best guess.

Best Lighting Design of a Musical

Neil Austin, “Company”

Tim Deiling, “Six: The Musical

Donald Holder, Paradise Square Natasha Katz, MJ

Bradley King, Flying Over Sunset Jen Schriever, A Strange Loop

I really appreciate the lighting design in “Six” because it truly makes me feel like I’m at a concert and the light matches the colors of each queen's costume.

Best Sound Design of a Play

Justin Ellington, “for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf

Mikhail Fiksel, “Dana H.”

Palmer Hefferan, “The Skin of Our Teeth”

Nick Powell and Dominic Bilkey, “The Lehman Trilogy”

Mikaal Sulaiman, “Macbeth”

Best Sound Design of a Musical

Simon Baker, “Girl From The North Country”

Paul Gatehouse, “Six: The Musical”

Ian Dickinson for Autograph, “Company”

Drew Levy, “A Strange Loop”

Gareth Owen, “MJ”

To be honest, I could not hear the cast of “Girl From The North Country” very well some of the time. I don’t know who's responsible for that, however for that reason I’m picking “Six”. I could hear all the queens and instruments clearly. Also the sound enhances the concert-like experience.

Best Choreography

Camille A. Brown, “for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf”

Warren Carlyle, “The Music Man”

Carrie-Anne Ingrouille, “Six: The Musical

Bill T. Jones, “Paradise Square”

Christopher Wheeldon, “MJ”

I’ve noticed that in “Paradise Square” the dancing seems to be quite intricate and hard to pull off, so I think they will win this one. Six doesn’t have too much dancing, but the choreography and staging is still cool.

Best Orchestrations

David Cullen, “Company”

Tom Curran, “Six: The Musical”

Simon Hale, “Girl From The North Country”

Jason Michael Webb and David Holcenberg, “MJ”

Charlie Rosen, “A Strange Loop”

If “Girl From The North Country” deserves any award, it’s this one. THANK YOU FOR BLESSING MY EARS. I imagine it was difficult to change the arrangements of these upbeat songs to make them so soothing. I also thing “A Strange Loop” deserves this award as well because I am a Charlie Rosen stan as I loved everything he did with “Be More Chill”.
